Travel Program to China (Yunnan) for Sketchers in April 2026

Day 1 – Wednesday, April 15: Flight to Beijing-Kunming
Day 2 – Thursday, April 16: Arrival in Kunming
Arrival in Kunming, “the City of Eternal Spring.” Transfer to the hotel in the city center (about one hour). Depending on the arrival time, we will visit the Buddhist Temple of Yuantong. It is considered one of the most important Buddhist temples in Yunnan Province.

Day 3 – Friday, April 17: Day in Kunming
Early morning, optional visit to the flower market. A walk in Green Lake Park, a true haven of peace where locals love to gather to stroll, sing, dance, and play music. Sketching Lunch In the afternoon, visit the Yunnan Ethnicities Museum. Yunnan is the province that comprises 36 ethnic groups among the 56 ethnic groups of all of China. A museum very rich in history and ethnic customs.

Day 4 – Saturday, April 18: Kunming – Shilin – Jianshui
Transfer to Shilin (1h15), discovery of the famous Stone Forest of Shilin, classified by UNESCO as natural heritage. The beauty of the Stone Forest lies in its spectacular karst formations, composed of thousands of limestone pillars that rise majestically from the ground. We will visit the Naigu Black Stone Forest. Located about thirty minutes from the Shilin Stone Forest, it reveals an area of approximately 10 square kilometers. With tourists being rare, this stone forest, more wild and primitive, leaves a more mysterious and exhilarating impression on travelers who dare to venture into its meanders.

Day 5 – Sunday, April 19: Jianshui
We visit the old quarter of the West Gate. In this picturesque neighborhood, you will have the opportunity to see local residents producing traditional tofu. Sketching. Walk then in the magnificent Confucius Temple of Jianshui. This temple is not only a center of Confucian education but also a gathering place for local communities. It plays an important role in preserving the cultural and educational traditions of the region.

We will cross the old town to the Zhu Family Garden. The most beautiful garden and building in Jianshui, built at the beginning of the 20th century by a very wealthy merchant, this 20,000 m² garden has 214 rooms, 42 large and small courtyards. In the late afternoon, discovery of the gate facing the sun, which displays a beautiful photo exhibition related to the construction of the railway line between Hanoi and Kunming, built by the French at the beginning of the 20th century.

Day 6 – Monday, April 20: Jianshui
We will depart towards Tuanshan village. You will make a stop at the Double Dragon Bridge. It is composed of seventeen arches of different sizes, representing an exceptional example of bridge architecture in China. Train enthusiasts can take a small train connecting Jianshui to Tuanshan. This train travels a restored section of the old railway line built by the French in Indochina in 1910. Sketching We will visit the ancient village of Tuanshan and its traditional houses from the Qing dynasty, testimonies of the former wealth of the villagers thanks to the tin trade. Discovery of Wanyao village, renowned for its pottery making. This place has a long history and exceptional craftsmanship, making it one of the most reputed pottery manufacturing centers in southern China. Visitors can admire magnificent pottery works, visit craft workshops, understand the manufacturing process, and even experiment with making pottery themselves.

Day 7 – Tuesday, April 21: Jianshui – Yuanyang
Transfer by road to Yuanyang (3h). Yuanyang is home to China’s largest and most beautiful rice terraces, a masterpiece of Hani agricultural tradition over several centuries. Upon arrival, we will visit the Hani panoramic platform, one of the best viewpoints to admire the region’s terraced rice fields.

At the end of the day, we go to the ‘Dawazhe’ rice terraces to watch the sunset.

Day 8 – Wednesday, April 22: Yuanyang
For the most courageous, sunrise over the terraced rice fields is a beautiful moment. Then discover the village of Azheke of the Hani ethnic group, which houses pretty mushroom-shaped houses. Sketching Lunch in the village In the afternoon, a hike from Qingkou village to Bada village. This 2.5 to 3-hour walk crosses rice terraces and picturesque villages. At the end of the day, in Bada, contemplate the splendor of the magnificent terraced rice fields at sunset.

Day 9 – Thursday, April 23: Yuanyang
Depending on the Chinese lunar calendar, a visit to a minority ethnic market can be organized. This market is a festival of colors and flavors, where traditions and local crafts come to life. Visit the lively market of Niu Jiaozhai, a traditional market where local communities gather, including the Hani and Yi. It’s a great opportunity to discover daily life, traditional clothing, and the authentic atmosphere of the region.

Day 10 – Friday, April 24: Yuanyang – Mile – Dali
Morning departure from Yuanyang by car to Mile (about 3 hours drive). Lunch in town Upon arrival, transfer to Mile train station to take the high-speed train to Dali (recommended train: D3941, departure at 1:38 PM / arrival at 4:56 PM). Upon arrival in Dali, meet your local driver and transfer to your hotel. Get acquainted with the surroundings. Optional sketching on the train

Day 11 – Saturday, April 25: Day in Dali
Visit a Chinese artist’s studio and an organic vegetable garden. Walk around Erhai by bike or on foot. Sketching

Day 12 – Sunday, April 26: Dali – Shaxi
After breakfast, transfer from Dali to Shaxi (approx. 2H15) Arrival in Shaxi, let’s visit the Taiji diagram and the eight trigrams at the village entrance, a symbolic representation of Chinese philosophy and the spatial organization of the place according to feng shui. Visit Shaxi village. It offers an immersive experience in authentic China. This village is crossed by the ancient Tea and Horse Road, revealing a rich heritage. The pure mountain air, the verdant rice fields as far as the eye can see, and the dynamic local market add to Shaxi’s enchantment.

Day 13 – Monday, April 27: Shaxi
Visit Mount Shibaoshan, famous for its rock carvings dating from the 9th to 14th century, representing Buddhist deities and scenes of daily life. Start with Baoxing Temple, perched on a cliff and nicknamed the “hanging temple of Yunnan.” Climbing the stairs, you will encounter monkeys; avoid feeding them for your safety. Then, take the bus to the summit to discover the Shizhong Caves, with their stone carvings and statues of Buddha and the Nanzhao royal family. Option: Return to Shaxi by car (40 min) or descend on foot via a trail to the Shadengqing valley (2h), offering a magnificent view. Note that the hike includes stairs, which can be a bit difficult for fragile knees

Day 14 – Tuesday, April 28: Shaxi-Lijiang
In the morning, transfer to Lijiang (about 2 hours drive), We will visit Lijiang, which is a very touristy city. According to your wishes, either a crowd bath in the old town, or at Heilongtan Park, where nature is magnificent with a pond surrounded by mountains.

Day 15 – Wednesday, April 29: Day in Suhe
Suhe is a Naxi village on the ancient tea and horse road, a relay to Tibet. Shuhe village was built on the mountainside and facing the river. There are 2 rivers that surround and cross it. Canals pass near the houses and its paved streets form a dense network that connects the village like a honeycomb structure. Sketching all day!

Selon l’heure d’arrivé, nous visiterons du Temple bouddhiste de Yuantong. Il est considéré comme l’un des plus importants temples bouddhistes de la province du Yunnan. Dessiner

J 3 – Vendredi, 17 avril : Journée à Kunming
Le petit matin, une visite de marché des fleurs en option. Une promenade au parc du lac d’Émeraude, véritable havre de paix où les locaux aiment se rassembler pour se promener, chanter, danser et jouer de la musique. Dessiner

l’après-midi, Visite le Musée des Ethnies de Yunnan. Yunnan est la province qui compose 36 ethnies parmi 56 ethnies de toute la Chine. Un Musée très riche d’histoires et de coutumes ethniques. Dessiner
Nuit en Kunming
J 4 – Samedi, 18 avril : Kunming – Shilin – Jianshui
Transfert à Shilin(1h15), découverte de la célèbre forêt de pierres de Shilin, classée par l’UNESCO comme patrimoine naturel. La beauté de forêt de pierres réside dans ses formations karstiques spectaculaires, composées de milliers de piliers de calcaire qui s’élèvent majestueusement du sol.
Nous visiterons la Forêt de Pierre Noire de Naigu. Située à environ trente minutes de la forêt de pierre de Shilin, révèle une étendue d’environ 10 kilomètres carrés. Les touristes y étant rares, cette forêt de pierre, plus sauvage et primitive, laisse une impression plus mystérieuse et exaltante aux voyageurs qui osent s’aventurer dans ses méandres. Dessiner

J 5 – Dimanche, 19 avril : Jianshui
Nous visitons le vieux quartier de la porte de l’Ouest. Dans ce quartier pittoresque, vous aurez l’occasion de voir des habitants locaux en train de produire du tofu traditionnel. Dessiner.
Balade ensuite dans le magnifique Temple de Confucius de Jianshui. Ce temple est non seulement un centre d’éducation confucéenne mais aussi un lieu du rassemblement des communautés locales. Il joue un rôle important dans la préservation des traditions culturelles et éducatives de la région. Dessiner
Nous traverserons la vieille ville jusqu’au Jardin de la famille Zhu. Le plus beau jardin et bâtiment de Jianshui qui construit au début du 20ème siècle par un commerçant très riche, ce jardin de 20,000 m² dispose de 214 pièces, 42 grandes et petites cours. Dans la fin d’après-midi, découverte de la porte qui face au soleil, qui expose une belle exposition de photos relatives à la construction de la ligne de chemin de fer entre Hanoï et Kunming, construite par les français au début du 20ème siècle.

J 6 – Lundi, 20 avril : Jianshui
Nous partirons vers le village de Tuanshan. Vous ferez une halte au pont du Double Dragon. Il est composé de dix-sept arches de tailles différentes, représentant un exemple exceptionnel de l’architecture des ponts en Chine. Les amateurs de trains peuvent emprunter un petit train reliant Jianshui à Tuanshan. Ce train parcourt une section restaurée de l’ancienne ligne ferroviaire construite par les Français en Indochine en 1910. Dessiner
Nous visiterons l’ancien village de Tuanshan et ses maisons traditionnelles de la dynastie des Qing, témoignages de l’ancienne richesse des villageois grâce au commerce de l’étain. Découverte du village de Wanyao, renommé pour sa fabrication de poterie. Ce lieu a une longue histoire et un savoir-faire exceptionnel, en en faisant l’un des centres de fabrication de poterie les plus réputés du sud de la Chine. Les visiteurs peuvent admirer de magnifiques œuvres en poterie, visiter des ateliers d’artisanat, comprendre le processus de fabrication, voire même expérimenter eux-mêmes la fabrication de poterie. J 7 – Mardi, 21 avril : Jianshui – Yuanyang
Transfert par la route vers Yuanyang (3h). Yuanyang abrite les plus grandes et les plus belles terrasses de rizières de Chine, un chef- d’œuvre de la tradition agricole Hani sur plusieurs siècles.
À l’arrivée, visiterons de la plateforme panoramique de Hani, l’un des meilleurs points de vue pour admirer les rizières en terrasses de la région. Dessiner
En fin de journée, nous allons aux rizières de ‘Dawazhe’. Pour voir le coucher du soleil.

Pour les plus courageurs, le lever du soleil sur les rizières en terrasse est un beau moment. Découvrez ensuite le village d’Azheke de l’ethnie Hani qui abrite de jolies maisons en forme de champignon. Dessiner

L’après-midi, une randonnée, du village de Qingkou au village de Bada. Cette promenade de 2h30 à 3 heures pour traverser des terrasses de rizières et des villages pittoresques. En fin de journée, à Bada, contemplez la splendeur des magnifiques rizières en terrasses au moment du coucher du soleil. Dessiner

J 9 – jeudi, 23 avril : Yuanyang
En fonction du calendrier lunaire chinois, une visite à un marché des ethnies minoritaires pourra être organisée. Ce marché est un festival de couleurs et de saveurs, où les traditions et l’artisanat local prennent vie. Visite du marché animé de Niu Jiaozhai, un marché traditionnel où se retrouvent les communautés locales, notamment les Hani et les Yi. C’est une belle occasion de découvrir la vie quotidienne, les vêtements traditionnels et l’ambiance authentique de la région.

Dpart le matin de Yuanyang en voiture pour Mile (environ 3h de route).

À l’arrivée, transfert à la gare de Mile pour prendre le train à grande vitesse en direction de Dali (train recommandé : D3941, départ à 13h38 / arrivée à 16h56). À l’arrivée à Dali, accueil par votre chauffeur local et transfert à votre hôtel. Faire de la connaissance des environs. Dessiner dans le train en option

Visite un atelier d’artiste chinois, et un jardin potager bio. Promenade autour d’Erhai en vélo ou pied. Dessiner

Après le petit déjeuner, transfert de Dali-Shaxi (2H15 env.)
Arrivée à Shaxi, visitons du diagramme du Taiji et des huit trigrammes à l’entrée du village, une représentation symbolique de la philosophie chinoise et de l’organisation spatiale du lieu selon le feng shui. Visite du village de Shaxi. Il offre une expérience d’immersion dans une Chine authentique. Ce village est traversé par l’ancienne Route du Thé et des Chevaux, dévoile un patrimoine riche. L’air pur de la montagne, les rizières verdoyantes à perte de vue et le marché local dynamique ajoutent à l’enchantement de Shaxi.

J 13 – Lundi 27 avril : Shaxi
Visitez la montagne Shibaoshan, célèbre pour ses sculptures rupestres datant du 9e au 14e siècle, représentant divinités bouddhistes et scènes de vie quotidienne. Commencez par le temple Baoxing, perché sur une falaise et surnommé le “temple suspendu du Yunnan”. En montant les escaliers, vous croiserez des singes ; évitez de les nourrir pour votre sécurité. Ensuite, prenez le bus jusqu’au sommet pour découvrir les Grottes Shizhong, avec leurs sculptures en pierre et statues de Bouddha et de la famille royale de Nanzhao.
Option : Retournez à Shaxi en voiture (40 min) ou descendez à pied par un sentier jusqu’à la vallée de Shadengqing (2h), offrant une vue magnifique. Notez que la randonnée comporte des escaliers, ce qui peut être un peu difficile pour les genoux fragiles

J 14 – Mardi, 28 avril : Shaxi-Lijiang
Le matin, transfert vers Lijiang (environ 2 heures de route),
Visiterons Lijiang qui est une ville très touristique. Selon vos désirs, soit un bain de foule dans la vieille ville, soit au Parc de Heilongtan, La nature est magnifique d’un étang avec des montagnes autours.

J 15 – Mercre, 29 avril : Jounée à Suhe
Suhe est un village de Naxi, sur l’ancienne route de du thé et des chevaux, un relais vers le Tibet.Le village de Shuhe a été construit à flanc de montagne et face à la rivière. Il y a 2 rivières qui l’entourent et le traversent. Les canaux passent près des maisons et ses rues pavées en font un réseau dense qui relie le village comme une structure alvéolée. Dessiner toue la journée !
