Ever sit down to sketch and hear that little voice whisper:
“You’re not an artist. What do you think you’re doing?”
It’s sneaky, isn’t it? Just when you want to try something new or open your sketchbook again, that doubt creeps in.
If you’ve felt it, you’re not alone—and you’re definitely not the only one it’s lied to.
That’s exactly why I am creating something new and try to find every day half hour to sketch before going to sleep. (instead of scrolling on my phone….it’s so addictive, that damn phone and social media…)
Do you think you don’t have time to sketch every day half hour? Just look how many hours per day you stare to your phone….
I made another tea cup challenge class on Skillshare, because sketching tea cups is not about perfection or pressure… but about practice.
Sketching tea cups with mixed media is your invitation to:
-
Show up for your creativity—without needing a “perfect” subject
-
Start where you are, with what you have
-
Build a sketchbook habit that feels joyful, not judgmental
-
Take the pressure off and just play
You don’t need talent. You don’t need confidence.
You just need a little spark to start and show up. Without judgement. Talk to yourself like you talk to your best friend.
Consistency is Key !
You only develop your sketching muscles and sketching skills by practicing regularly.
Make at least one cup a day and your skills will be skyrocketing at the end of the month !
I already made a watercolor teacup challenge, but watercolor can be challenging to get a great result.
In my latest 2 mixed media classes I got a lot of feedback about how liberating it is to add color pencil to the watercolor sketches to make them more playful.
So let’s dive deeper and add more color pencil, more wax crayons, more gouache paint and even acrylic paint and gold !
And maybe you even have something else to add?
Come and sketch tea cups with me !
With this link you can have a 30 days try out on Skillshare if you didn’t already use it. (unsubscribe before the 30 days are over if you don’t want to pay!)

Your topic is spot on this week as I was struggling with the very idea of, “what am I even doing?” and is this even art? And it is worsened by wasting time scrolling! One of my purposes of learning to sketch a few years ago was to do more than stare into my phone. I didn’t want to look back in 5, 10 or 15 years and realize that all I’ve done is spent time staring into a screen with nothing to show for it. I still do too much of it, but I do try to incorporate 15 minutes daily with my paints. I’m trying to be satisfied that my daily practice is providing a record of my progress and that things are moving along (although much slower than I would like). And it has given me joy while creating and also in looking back on it. Thank you for your words of wisdom and your beautiful art.
Thank you so much dear Vivian!
This is so well described!
I’m so happy to read that you get joy while creating!
That’s the purpose !
